At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
