Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party
From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, fiends, and sinister influences growing in power within the city.
Warning: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
The latest chapter concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to begin their own adventure, separate from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table consists of Teor (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).
The Reason for Division
With a large ensemble, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be unworkable.
That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.
What Defines the Warrior Group
As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are scarce.
Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might appear unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then paid off his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Personal Motivations
Moreover, each member has a specific drive to leave the city Dol-Makjar:
- The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- But, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could enable the party reach areas they usually can’t.
- Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that govern the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and The cleric defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.
This leaves them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.
What’s Next?
From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the players to round up the Seekers and Planners parties.
Fans can look forward to discovering which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
