Our Leading Release of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

At first glance, this album may look more like an arduous academic examination than the latest pop record from a musician who just had a last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided into four separate parts and voiced in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic work exploring feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the prism of various female saints. The end of a romance—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched upwards here, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a long roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of other pop stars look rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in transcend dry academic chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, and complete praise going to the artist. Although this is not the first time album to fuse historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions are much greater on Lux, and the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during the stirring Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Then, everything drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song then segues to the wild single driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of Lux is that you never quite know—or even wish to predict—where you is going to next."

Almost every track finishes in a completely distinct place from how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on the album is straddling the line of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved her first work to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. This feat is echoed by a different powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent excess. This is a deep well of buried gems that takes time to completely explore but never seem like hard work. While some major pop albums of the year felt like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast where the guests around the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flutter from discussions about historical saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
