The Video Platform Offers Users Authority to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds
Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to cut down on the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the platform disclosed that it now features more than 1 bn AI videos.
Testing and Rollout
The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This advancement aligns with a increase in content created by AI, fueled by new content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on another major platform only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a term for inferior, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.
Based on user feedback that numerous viewers appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.
Volume and Proportions
The platform shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, more than 100 m videos are added to the app each day, making AI content a relatively small part of its complete catalog.
Customizing Your Feed
Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the content preference option in the application and picking “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be modified under the filter include current affairs, fashion, beauty, and movement.
AI Disclosure Rules
The platform’s policies mandate content makers to label convincing AI-made content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.
In addition, the service will from now on attach an AI-generated tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting content made by AI. This measure is aimed to deter users from seeking to circumvent the disclosure requirement.
Responsible AI Funding
The company is also establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and groups to create informative material about ethical AI use. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, during discussion over plans to make redundant numerous review team members in Britain. TikTok is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that people are being substituted by machine-led review.
A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it is viewed by people. The platform reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its machine learning processes.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
