Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
