Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
